5 Low-Tension Hairstyles to Try on Your Curls

Curly hair can be both beautiful and challenging to manage. After discovering that I have traction alopecia, I’ve learned that the key to saving my edges is to find low-tension hairstyles that don’t pull on my already fragile hairline. This means doing looser styles that don’t stress the delicate areas on my scalp. So, I’ve compiled a list of 5 low-tension hairstyles to try on your curls. Here are some of my favorites.

5 Low-Tension Hairstyles

  1. The Wash-and-Go

The Wash-and-Go is an easy low-tension hairstyle that lets your curls form in their natural state. To achieve this style, simply wash your hair, apply a leave-in conditioner and a curl-defining cream. Choosing the right curl-enhancing products will produce the best results as well. While it might be tempting, it’s best to keep your hands off your curls as it dries to avoid frizz.

  1. The Braid-Out

The Braid-Out is another low-tension hairstyle that is perfect for curly hair. Start by braiding your hair while it’s damp and let it air dry. I like to use curl foams to keep the result light and bouncy. The braids help to define and elongate your curls, and once you take the braids out, you’ll be left with a wavy, defined style.

  1. The Twist-Out

The Twist-Out is similar to the Braid-Out, but instead of braiding your hair, you do a two-strand twist. Begin by twisting your hair while it’s damp (also with a curl foam) and letting it air dry. This style is slightly looser than the braid-out but creates another beautiful, low-tension hairstyle.

  1. The Pineapple

The Pineapple hairstyle works well for those with naturally curly or wavy hair. It is probably my favorite go-to hairstyle because it’s easy and typically done daily on my non-wash days. All you have to do is gather your hair into a high ponytail on the top of your head and secure it with a silk scrunchie (to avoid breakage). This style is excellent for hot days, looks elegant, and protects your hair while you sleep.

  1. Loose Low Ponytail

Lastly, a loose low ponytail is an easy low-tension hairstyle option. To achieve this style, gather your hair into a low ponytail at the nape of your neck and secure it with a hair tie or hair accessory. Leave a few strands of hair around your face for a soft, romantic look that also takes the stress off the hairline.

Now, you have a better understanding of why low-tension hairstyles are essential for those with curly hair. By using the right products, avoiding over-manipulating your hair, and embracing styles like the Wash-and-Go, your curls, and hairline can live their best lives.

My Three Step Wash N’ Go for Busy Moms

Step 1

Begin this wash n’ go by thoroughly saturating your curls with water. Add a small amount of the Innersense Hydrating Cream Hair Bath into the palm of your hands and work into a light lather. Apply to the scalp and spend a couple minutes massaging the hair bath into your scalp with your fingertips. Rinse well to remove all traces of the hair bath. If the buildup is heavy and time allows it, repeat the process.

Step 2

Next, apply a generous amount of the Innersense Hydrating Cream Conditioner to your curls from midshaft to the ends. Detangle using a wide-tooth comb, or shower brush. Leave it on the hair for 5 minutes to deeply moisturize and use that time to complete the rest of your shower process. Rinse thoroughly and blot hair dry using a soft T-shirt or paper towels.

Step 3

Lastly, add a few pumps of the Innersense I Create Lift Volumizing Foam into the palm of your hands and rake it through sections of your curls. For extra definition, twist individual curls with fingers and then scrunch with both hands. Add more foam as needed and let it either air-dry or use a blow-dryer with a diffuser attachment. Once hair is dry, gently shake out the roots and scrunch to break up the cast. Use a pick at the roots to add more volume.

Butter London Eventful Holiday Set

In my attempt to be more ‘girly’, I’m venturing off into the world of nails. There are several nail brands that I’ve used and loved but Butter London is new to my collection.  After learning about this brand, I’m intrigued by the story, quality of ingredients and elegance of the bottles.

According to the Butter London site, it was created by Sasha Muir and Nonie Creme (London’s premier’s fashion manicurist) and was the first brand to create a healthy nail lacquer. Butter London nail products are “8-Free” formulated without:

  • Formaldehyde
  • Formaldehyde Resin
  • DBP
  • Toluene
  • Camphor
  • Ethyl Tosylamide
  • Xylene
  • TPHP

Unlike many other nail brands, Butter London has a unique rectangular shape to its bottles. The look screams glamour with a beautiful chrome finish on the cap. However, with superior quality comes a heftier price tag. À la carte, each bottle of lacquer retails at $18 each for 0.4 fl oz. Luckily, this holiday season I purchased the Eventful gift set with 6 nail lacquers on sale for $22 (original retail price $44). No they’re not full size but each bottle contains 0.2 fl oz, enough to sample several shades.

The first shade I was attracted to was Scrumptious, a beautiful deep mauve that was perfect for my toes. For my fingers, I chose a softer, dusty pink shade called Mum’s The Word. The colors were the perfect mix of naughty and nice and paired well during my holiday parties.

The verdict is in: I’m obsessed and ready to add to my Butter London collection! Next on my list is the Treatment Collection to prep and prime these puppies.

Sunglass Spot Rose Decorated Sunnies

How could I pass this purchase up?!! These rose decorated oversized retro round sunglasses scream cool girl and have so much character. About once a year, I visit Sunglass Spot and order about a half a dozen pairs. Their prices are incredibly low (I think I paid $5 for these) and they offer $5 shipping on an order of 6 pairs.

Lace & Love

Even in the blistering heat, I couldn’t pass up wearing this long-sleeved lace dress from Forever 21. Luckily it was short enough to keep me cool and the sleeves were unlined. The slightly mocked turtleneck also helped.

For my hair, this is 3rd day hair picked to the max. This is generally when my hair looks its best. Prior to this look, I completed a wash & go and used Briogeo Curl Charisma Rice Amino & Quinoa Frizz Control Gel.

BonLook Dolled Up Frames

Sometimes a girl just needs a new look and changing your frames can be an easy upgrade. Prior to these frames from Bonlook, I had a pair of  rectangular Giorgio Armani’s. They were great but after 5 years, it was time for an upgrade. I was a little hesitant about ordering frames online but the price was right and it included a prescription.

I discovered BonLook on Instagram and was impressed with the styles they offered. I desperately wanted a pair of tortoise shell style cat-eyes…and these were perfect. Some of the pros of Bonlook are:

What I found helpful was doing a search on YouTube for my frames. I found several reviews on them and I was able to get an idea of how they would work on my face shape.

Into The Blue…

When your friends give you hand me downs, you make it work. I needed some color in my life and this short-sleeved A-line dress had just enough flair. I love the white collar that adds school girl innocence in a not so basic royal blue shade.

With the higher neck line on this dress, placing my curls in a half-up half-down style helped balance the look. I brightened up my face with a classic cat-eye and my favorite red lipstick, MAC’s Lady Danger. Lastly, these colorful round sunnies from Sunglass Spot added just a touch of party girl.
